Snowmobile of the thirties?
Red Army maneuvers in wintertime in the end of twenties didn't allow the use of mechanized assets because almost every year deep snow was settling down, that was particularly prohibitive to the use of individual motorcycles. In 1930 the Red Army High Command studied closely different Western designs of motorcycles for roadless terrain, but none of them satisfied their requirements. Among domestic designs there were two approaches taken: design of a specialized snow-faring motorcycle and design of special attachments to be installed on a standard-issue cycles. The latter was more preferred. In 1931 inventors Drilling and Kuznetsov developed such a device for the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. However its trials in Kubinka have shown that it is not meeting the requirements. During trials the tester Kultchitsky came up with a simple and original idea to augment the cycle's side-car with a ski. This solution has significantly improved the motorcycle's mobility and has been accepted for service.
