The character of war actions in Afghanistan revealed great dependence on helicopters. In connection with this Mil's design office modernized its famous helicopter Mi-8. The vehicle now had new engines with takeover power of 1900 h. p. each and many features were improved. The speed of the Mi-17, that was the name given to the new vehicle, increased up to 250 km/h, its ceiling - to 5000 m, and its range - to 500 km. Increased energy capabilities allowed to increase the fire power by enlarging board and suspended armour and also to increase to maneuverability of the helicopter which is especially important in mountain battles.
