TRN-140 T-62 Soviet Main Battle Tank bookT-62 the Soviet Main Battle TankT-62 Middle Tank was the last stage in the evolution of the famous T-34 tank construction, which started as long ago as 1939. But unlike its older "brothers" - T-34, T-43, T-44 and T-54 tanks, created under the leadership of A.A. Morozov, T-62 tank was designed under L.N. Kartsev, who became the Head of Design Bureau of Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) in Nizhni Tagil after the A.A. Morozov had returned to Kharkov. T-62 was urgently designed in the end of the 50s as a temporary replacement for the new powerful middle tanks of the after-war generation the creation of which though started in the beginning of 50s took much longer than anticipated. That is why in order to decrease the time for design work and easier mass production launch, the construction of the new tank was based on the parts and systems of T-54/55 tanks. Despite all the shortcomings mentioned above, T-63 had been produced in the USSR and under a license in CzSSR for more than ten years. According to rather rough estimations there were over 20 thousand of these vehicles produced. And though the latter number is much less than those 80 thousand units of its predecessor T-54/55, but still it is rather respectable. As well as the fact, that T-62 tanks equips the armies of more than twenty different states. T-62 tank was destined to have a long and diverse career. These tanks have been used extensively since 1969 and to present moment in different parts of the world starting from the Far East and ending in Africa. In the ranks of the Soviet and later Russian Armies, T-62 tanks participated in the borderline Soviet-Chinese Conflict at the Damanski Island in 1969 (this was a baptism by fire for the tank). A few tank regiments equipped with T-62s were a part of Limited Soviet Contingent in Afghanistan and now T-62M tanks participate in the counter terror operation in Chechnia. A large number of T-62 tanks still serve in the armies of various Arabic states. And though, at the moment, one can say that T-62 is the tank of the last century, there are no doubts that its active service is far from over. The good evidence of the later are the different modernization projects for T-62 which are currently being developed by Russian and foreign firms.
