In 1943 the Red Army has passed to offensive battle operations. In this connection it was a necessity to have powerful, but the mild and manoeuvrable gun, which was capable to destroy enemy's permanent fortifications effectively.
The new 152 mm D-1 howitzer was created on the basis of the 122 mm M-30 howitzer by the design bureau headed of F.F. Petrov (the distinguished soviet designer) in 1943.
The gun was accepted on the arms of the Red Army under the title the 152 mm howitzer of a sample of 1943 (D-1) in August, 1943.
Production of the howitzer D-1 began in 1943. About 1000 units of this gun were manufactured in war years. Mainly howitzers D-1 were on service of the body artillery regiments and artillery divisions of the Reserve of Main Command (RMC) of the Red Army.
The experience of usage has shown, that the D-1 howitzer was the rather reliable gun, had a good accuracy of fire and stability.
