The experience gamed by Luftwaffe in using FW-189 twin-boom reconnaissance and artillery observation aircraft on the Eastern Front and P-38 Lightning by allies on the Western Front, raised a question of a similar plane availability in the inventory of the Soviet Air Forces.
After the end of World War II the Sukhoi s design bureau was assigned to develop such a plane In the shortest period, for just 150 days, Su-12, a four-seat reconnaissance and artillery observation aircraft was designed and constructed In December 1947, it was handed over for the State Flight Tests.
Despite the successful completion of the State Flight Tests in 1948, only two experimental aircrafts were built For several years they were used for various military and civil purposes, including aerial photography of the remote areas of the USSR.
In reality, Su-12 proved to be a reliable aircraft in operation.
