From early February to July 1943, the Soviet troops conducted large-scale operations for liberating the Kuban Region. In the course of these operations, the Red Army managed to liberate Krasnodar and adjacent territories, break up the defences of Wehrmacht's 17. Armee in the vicinity of Krymskaya and establish an additional beachhead (that came to be called Malaya Zemlya - Small Land) near Novorossiysk. Within a half year of continuous attacks, the Red Army exhausted the defending enemy units and created prerequisites for liberating the whole territory of North Caucasus.
