The Baltic strategic defensive operation was conducted by troops of Northwestern Front. From 22 June up to 9 July 1941, in Lithuania and Latvia the Red Army was waging heavy defensive battles and was forced to retreat to Estonia and north-western areas of Russia. As a result of that intensive resistance, Soviet troops slowed down the advance of Heeresgruppe Nord and inflicted considerable losses to its attack grouping. This book describes these events and contains in addition 15 colour drawings of uniforms and armaments, 2 combat operation maps and 92 photographs.

Illustrations
1. Panzerjaeger I (35R) self-propelled 47mm guns belonging to an anti-tank battalion of Wehrmacht's 1 .panzer-Division. Soviet-German Front, attack sector of Heeresgruppe Nord, June 1941
2. Tankman of 2nd Armoured Division of the Red Army's 3rd Mechanized Corps. He is wearing a variety of dungarees and a tank helmet. In this specific case, tabs are sewn down to the dungarees collar, but this practice was quite uncommon, especially after the war beginning. North-Western Front, June 1941
Tank company commander of Red Army's 23rd Armoured Division. The Lieutenant is wearing riding breeches and a double-breasted moleskin jacket. He is also wearing a grey service cap of Armour troops which was abolished by 1941. It was far from common practice to sew down collar tabs to jackets, especially in combat conditions. North-Western Front, July 1941
3. Machinegunner of Red Army's 201st Airborne Brigade named after S.M. Kirov. Despite the fact that brigade was used as an infantry (as part of the 5th Airborne Corps), this soldier is wearing special overalls and accoutrements designed for parachute jumps (except for a parachute itself). The warrior is armed with a 7.62mm light machinegun designed by Degtyarev of the 1927 model. Latvia, early July 1941
Tank company commander of 5th Motorized Rifle Regiment of 22nd Motorized Rifle Division of NKVD. That division was operationally subordinate to Commander and Headquarters of Transbaltics Special Military District. Collar tabs of tankman are not usual black, but madder red, in spite of the tank emblem. The service cap of the NKVD Lieutenant is also a traditional one: the cap band is of madder colour, the cap crown is dark-blue. The same distinctive colours were used in clothing of commanders of armoured trains of NKVD. Vicinity of Riga, July 1941
4. Ambulance car on chassis of m.gl.Einheits-Pkw (4x4) Horch ??? Efm Kfz. 15 belonging to Wehrmacht's 1.Panzer-Division is crossing a river. Northwestern Front, July 1941
5. German troops are advancing eastwards. In foreground is a wrecked artillery prime mover ST3-5NATI and T-34/76 tank model 1940 (with L-11 gun) that has run onto it. North-Western Direction, July 1941
