In late 1950ies and early 1960ies all design bureaus occupied with jet plane development were solving the swing wing problem that should have increased manoeuverability and load of the planes as well as shorten the takeoff and landing. The Su-7IG construction was the base for individual Sukhoi plane types Su-17, Su-17M, Su-17MK, Su-17M2-D, and Su-17M-3 and Su-17M4. The export designation for Su-17 is Su-20 and Su-22. According to the former USSR tradition, two-seat variants marked Su-17UM-2D (Su-22 UM-2D) and Su-17UM-3 (Su-22UM-3) were produced. The Su-17 (Su-20 and Su-22) planes are designated Su-17 Fitter in the NATO code and individual versions are distinguished with characters. It is possible to suspend 150 variants of weapons (including nuclear arms) onto a Su-17/22. The Sukhoi planes named Su-20/22 were delivered to the former Warsaw Pact armies and they still serve with many air forces of the third world, e.g. Poland, Germany. Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya. All Sukhoi 17/20/22 variants have fighter bomber and reconaissance capabilities. The recce version has an - R designation after the type name.BR>
