In autumn of 1941 Kirov's plant was evacuated from Leningrad to Tschelyabinsk, to Tschelyabinsk tractor plant named after Stalin. It was a difficult task to tune production of KV-1 heavy tank in severe conditions and at new location. In terms of wartime, when it was a lack of everything: production equipment, materials, workers, a lot of changes and simplifications were put into design of KV tank. These measures allowed to create in Tschelyabinsk the Ural heavy tank production set of plants, more known as Tankograd (Tanktown). This set gave to frontover 300 KV-1 tanks monthly.
But by spring of 1942, it became clear that KV-1 had a lot of technical shortages. That's why in August O/1942 more absolute KV-1S was put into production. In a year it was substituted by KV-85 with 85-mm gun. Production of KV tank series had stopped in October of 1943, after new series of IS tanks was launched. KV-1 tanks had been actively used in combat actions all around Soviet-German front since 1941 till 1944, and some vehicle until the end of war.
