Upon completion of the Second World War, the Soviet Army's armour remained a formidable power. Until the dissolution of the Soviet Union, armour was maintaining true leadership amongst the armies of the world through operating more armoured vehicles than all its potential opponents combined. Even following the commencement of perestroika and reductions in the Soviet armed forces, the Soviet armoured armada still retained its impressive punch: as of 1 January 1990, there were 63,900 tanks and 76,520 infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) and armoured personnel carriers (APC) in the Soviet Armoured Troops' inventory. Being mobile front-level formations, armoured armies included in addition to tanks proper a number of anti-aircraft artillery (AAA), surface-to-air missile (SAM) system and aviation units. All of them were deployed in the western approach - in the German Democratic Republic and European part of the Soviet Union, Their offensive punch was really formidable. No country in the world could boast an armoured fist like that. In addition to armoured larger units, a great number of tanks were operated by mechanised infantry divisions. Tank battalions were organic to infantry regiments too, with the latter's shock power roughly matching that of armoured regiments.
The collapse of the Soviet Union put an end to once awesome military power. Some armoured units were reduced under the Treaty on Conventional Force in Europe (CFE) white some were carved up by former Soviet republics whose armies now are a mere shade of the former military power.
The book contains information on the post-WWII history of the Soviet armoured and mechanised forces, TO&E of the Soviet Armoured troops, reference data on all Soviet armoured armies as well as armoured and mechanised divisions.
The book features photographs from the archive of the author (AA), collection of V. Markovsky (KM), M.Baryatinsky (KB), I. Zheltov (IQK), photos by Yu. Spasibukhov, V. Kuznetsov.
80 pages, 165 photos.
