ACE-72147 1/72 BTR-50PU Soviet Tracked Command Vehicle model kitDuring the development of the BTR-50P, it was decided to develop corresponding command vehicles. The first of these was the BTR-50PN which entered production in 1958 alongside the BTR-50PK. The more common command type was designated the BTR-50PU. This command version resembled the BTR-50PK, but had a modified armored roof with oval doors and additional vents to dissipate the heat from added electronics and generators. The radio fit of the BTR-50PU varied depending on its role. Variants were built with assortments of the R-l 12, R-l 13, R-105, or R-105U; R-403BM radio relay (half-set); R-311 radio receiver, P-193A field telephone system. The boxy hull of the BTR-50P made it very suitable for this role, and these command vehicles remained in service long after the demise of the BTR-50P infantry carriers. Indeed, some of the BTR-50P infantry carriers were rebuilt in the command vehicle role. Later improved versions of the BTR-50PU family included the BTR-50PUM and the BTR-50PUM-1. Due to the shortcomings in the BTR-50PK design, its production ended in the mid-1960's. However, the BTR-50PU command vehicle had proved a very useful vehicle, and production continued until 1972-73.
