After the successful debut of the two-seat Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter fighter, RNAS ordered the Sopwith 9700 single-seat bomber among six new types for its own needs. The first single-seat 1 1/2 Strutter was delivered to the RNAS in June 1916, but official acceptance took place in August. The fuselage of the Type 9700 was modified to provide internal stowage for the bomb load. For easy access to the bomb racks additional doors were installed in the fuselage sides; four bomb doors were installed under the fuselage, opening just before dropping the bomb. The pilot also had a single Vickers synchronized gun. Nicknamed Sopwith Bombers, they were intensively used until the more modern DH4 appeared. After withdrawal from the front line, single-seaters were dispersed between various training units; some converted to the Ship Strutter standard and were based on aircraft carriers. In spite of criticism, the Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter was a conceptual forerunner of many successful designs and deserved fame as one of the classic aircraft of World War One. Highly recommended!

- A new naval hisorical publication has arrived! Torpedo Boats of The Russian Fleet book just have been printed and is available for online ordering (price $9.95). The 1877-78 Russian-Turkish war showed what a terrible weapon a torpedo was. This war also exposed deficiencies of torpedo carriers. Their lack of seagoing abilities and slow speed sometimes made mine attacks impossible. To provide such attacks bigger ships of special construction, such as torpedo boats, were needed. An impulse of their intensive construction in Russia were strained diplomatic relations with Great Britain as well as the absence of a modern armored fleet in Russia. To defend sea approaches to St.Petersburg almost every domestic dockyard began building a number of relatively inexpensive torpedo boats. The work continued day and night at full speed and by January 1, 1878 the Russian Navy had had as much as 111 ships of this class. 52 pages, 60 photos, 23 schemes. Recommended!

- For WW2 Armour Fans! A new interesting high illustrated publications Tiger German WW2 Tanks at the Eastern Front. Part 1 book and Tiger German WW2 Tanks at the Eastern Front. Part 2 book are available for online ordering (price $11.95 for each). Tiger I tank played a very important part in the battles of the Second World War. The appearance of these tanks on the battlefields allowed delaying the collapse of the Nazi regime in Germany. At the moment of its first appearance, Tiger tank was superior to any tank of the Allies. The achievements of the 502nd, 503rd and 505th heavy tank battalions' crews are more than just impressive. With the advent of the new Soviet tanks and anti tank artillery pieces on the Eastern Front in the middle of 1943 - beginning of 1944, the Tigers superiority gradually disappeared. But still, the Tigers crews often gained the upper hand even in the battles with such a formidable foe as IS-2 tank. Overall, approximately 1000 Tiger tanks took part in the battles on the Eastern Front, and they destroyed around 8000 Soviet tanks. This ration of kills over losses (1:8) was not equaled by any other tank of the Second World War. Both books contain a lot of photos and illustrations. Recommended!
